Anna Gruver
Based in Kyiv, Ukraine
Anna Gruver was named a laureate of the UNESCO Kraków City of Literature Award for her poetry. Her fiction confronts loss of home, migration, and human rights violations through the eyes of those who lived them. She is a member of PEN Ukraine.
Born in Donetsk, where she lived until aged 17. Gruver is the author of the poetry book «За вашим запитом нічого не знайдено» / Nothing was found at your request (2019), the novels «Її порожні місця» / Her Empty Places (Old Lion Publishing House, 2022) and «Нерухомість» / Immovable Objects (Laboratory, 2025). Her poems were translated into English, French, German, etc. In 2025, the collection Po prostu chcę podzielić się chwilą translated by Aneta Kamińska’s was published in Poland. The collection Stránka nenalezena translated by Marie Iljašenko was published in the Czech Republic in 2026.
Gruver translates essays and contemporary poetry from Ukrainian into Polish and vice versa. Anna translated the book by Katie Ferris /boysgirls/ from English into Ukrainian (2021) and in collaboration with Vasyl Makhno a poetry collection by Bohdan Zadura, «Прості Істини» / Simple Truths (2024). She is an editor and author of comments for the book of memory of the scientist, religious scholar and prisoner of conscience Ihor Kozlovsky, «Вільний у полоні» / Free in Captivity (2025).
Both her novels have been translated into Polish and German in fragments. Harvard University Press is preparing a translation of Anna Gruver's second novel Immovable Objects. The novel is being translated from Ukrainian into English by Ali Kinsella.
