Ella Yevtushenko
Based in Kyiv, Ukraine
Ella Yevtushenko is internationally translated poet, with her own poems appearing in more than ten languages and in anthologies and magazines across France, the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Egypt. She works fluently in both directions of literary translation, carrying contemporary Ukrainian poetry into French and major English- and French-language writers into Ukrainian – a double fluency that has placed her at the centre of literary exchange between Ukraine and the francophone world.
As editor and translator, she assembled and translated Ukraine: 24 poètes pour un pays (Bruno Doucey, Paris, 2022), the anthology that introduced a generation of contemporary Ukrainian poets to French readers and went on to translate further Ukrainian poetry into French, including collections by Mykhailo Semenko and Yaryna Chornohuz. Since her 2016 debut collection Lichtung, her own work has grown into a second collection, Au coeur de la maison (Bruno Doucey, Paris, 2023), written and self-translated in Ukrainian and French.
On the other side of her practice, Yevtushenko has translated more than thirty books of prose and poetry from French and English into Ukrainian, bringing writers such as Kurt Vonnegut, Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Ford Madox Ford, and Jean-Christophe Grangé to Ukrainian readers. She has read at international festivals including the Authors' Reading Month in the Czech Republic and extends her literary work into sound through the electronic music and poetry project Thuyone and the YouTube channels Yak po notakh and Kulturtrigger.
